Day one of potty training went well yesterday :) Here's hoping day two is a good one :)

I will run 7 after school.  I am trying to figure out tomorrow's running/biking.  I think I will run 2 and bike 36 for the 5.  I am also trying to make sure that I do not gain weight over the weekend.  I need to be at goal by Tuesday night and I typically weigh a lot more after long runs and races :(  Any pointers for eating enough food for the race, but NOT TOO MUCH???  I retain a bunch of water, but I can fx that with drinking pleanty of water and eating lots of fruits and veggies.  This may sound really stupid to many of you, but at work we get awards for being at goal everymonth for the year and I WANT MY AWARD.  ;D

*** seven miles at 4pm.  The wind was stiff and cold!  The last 2.5 miles had a very cold stiff head wind!  DARN IT!!!  My face is frozen and I can't talk normally :(  I sound like drunk.  Anyway, I am off to entertain a bunch of 8 year olds.  I wonder if they will notice how much I stink?

I hope you have better weather this afternoon.

I hope you get alot of discussions on keeping the weight down after a long run, I gain every single time, so I am anxious to hear what all the skinny people say.

Good luck on the potty training mom, I say go cold turkey and put him in big boy pants!

From seeaprilrun on Thu, Mar 26, 2009 at 11:05:45 from 68.102.144.140

Yeah on the potty training!--my daughter is still not interested. Sigh. I am ready to be done with diapers. Is that common to gain during a long run? I suppose I should weigh before and after my next long run. I don't know if I gain or not...

From Metcalf Running on Thu, Mar 26, 2009 at 11:26:32 from 207.225.192.66

Good luck with the potty training... I'm so happy I'm done with all that. When I was potty training my kids they didn't have all the fancy pull ups etc. so it was big boy paints or diapers, I think after a few accidents in big boy pants they learn pretty fast.

Wish I could help you with the weight stuff, I struggle all the time with it weather it's a long run or not. Here to getting your Award!!!

From Marion on Thu, Mar 26, 2009 at 11:54:45 from 71.219.49.78

I am with you- no pull-ups! They are a waste of money and more money :) He's got his Spiderman, Thomas the Train and Lightning McQueen undies :) He's really doing great! David did buy him a 5 lbs bag of mini candy bars for bribes! We are all keeping our big boy pants dry for a bit of chocolate :) My 14 year old asked for some and I told her she had to go potty on the toilet first!

From Smooth on Thu, Mar 26, 2009 at 13:17:24 from 71.36.65.79

LOL! Can I have some if I go potty first? I'm actually potty training myself so I DON'T have to go during a race. My big girl shorts are always dry except while sprinting at the last stretch of a 5K where everyone is out of control!

Here's another idea for "rewards" after Zach (that's the one, right?) uses the potty and stays dry...give him a drink of his favorite beverage. It creates a cycle, drinks = need to go = need to stay dry = reinforcement = success = more rewards (drinks). HAPPY potty training.

Oh, on the weight thing. I have been experimenting with weighing myself before and after long runs on WARM days. The weight drop is fluid loss from perspiration. Anywhere more than 10% loss is severe dehydration. However, the weight gain the day or 2 after a long run/hard race is more from the body's response to recovery. Within the week, your body should return to normal weight.

For races/runs that last less than 2 hours, I don't carb load. For races/runs longer than that I hydrate and carb load 24 hours before. Everyone's GI system is different. I find that it takes 12 hours for the food to fully digest so I time my dinner according to the race start time. The morning of the race, I will eat a light breakfast and drink. Stop drinking an hour before race time, use the potty and take a drink just before gun time. This is probably more info that you want.

K, just read your concern about gaining weigh over the weekend. Just don't carb-load tomorrow. Eat what you normally eat. After the race, drink something that has a little more protein. Slim fast is a good recovery drink. Eat a light lunch. Keep drinking throughout the day, water is the best. Hope that helps.

Thanks smooth, for the potty training tips and the food tips! :) I am going to try it for Antelope Island SAt. I will be running 17 miles. I am going to bring a Slim Fast to drink afterwards for the protein, great idea!! And then be super careful the rest of the day and see if I can avoid poundage!!!! Dang I am excited for Sat., you would think it was my race! Maurine is going to do totally awesome I know!!!!

From Kelli on Thu, Mar 26, 2009 at 14:38:25 from 71.219.100.181

MArion----I am with you! I got my BRAVO sticker today. It was fun to go to a weigh in having NO CLUE what the scale would say. I was a tad nervous. I usually run 10 miles every Thursday (weigh in day) and I did not do that today so that was 2 pounds right there that I was nervous about! Anyway, I was up 1.2, so I am actually thinking I may really be down some since I did not sweat anything off before I weighed in like usual. If that makes any sense...

I do not typically have a weight gain AFTER a 1/2 marathon, just longer runs and full marathons. I say just guzzle water like crazy!!!

It sure did get windy out this afternoon. Twi and I were shivering just walking around my complex. Brave of you to get out.

I think you will do awesome on your race and afterwards. Just think of it as a long run and don't carbo load and drink a lot afterwards. I typically see weight gain only on 20+ mile runs and marathons because I am eating more.

Good luck with training Will. My kids both were in cloth diapers and big kid pants - so they quickly got tired of being wet.

Leslie- Maurine is lucky to have you there tomorrow! You guys are going to have so much fun!!

From tarzan on Fri, Mar 27, 2009 at 12:46:27 from 97.117.61.64

Marion, thank you for your concern. I am feeling much better today and took the day off of work (well - sort of - I keep checking mail and doing database work at home).
