Goal- 20 minute swim, 3.5 mile recovery run

Swam 1000 meters in about 25 minutes.  I had a ~3 minute blab with a friend in there, so the time is a bit off.

Ran 3.5 miles 43:49, ave 12:31, splits- 12:59, 12:58, 11:59, 11:42

It was really hard to run after swimming.  I need to remember to drink, eat AND go potty before running.  I ate and drank, but skipped to potty break :(  The run felt very awkward and sort of like I was running on stilts.  I need some new goggles.  My eyes are crossed for about 5 minutes after I take them off.  I will crash on my bike in the tri.  I am also going to have to figure out clothing.  Do I just wear my sports bra under my suit and then just slap on shorts for the biking and running???  I need to register for the tri today :)

Not a clue from me! BUT GREAT JOB!!!!

From Maurine/Tarzan on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 10:39:59 from 63.255.172.2

Good job on getting out there. Which tri have you decided to do?

From seeaprilrun on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 11:04:39 from 68.102.144.140

That is exactly what I have always wondered about triathlons--how do you go about the transition process?

From marion on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 11:25:46 from 71.219.57.176

I nearly broke my wrist trying to get my sports bra on today. It got all twisted and stuck on my wet back. The hair is a problem too.

Maurine- I am going to do the Sandy one :) I can't handle the open water :(

From marion on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 11:35:29 from 71.219.57.176

All registered for the "I Can Tri" in Sandy, Utah, September 12th, 2009. Ta dah!!!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 11:47:41 from 71.229.164.25

There must be some tri person who can give you tips on the clothing. If no one does, I no a few people locally who do triathlons. I can ask around.

From Maurine/Tarzan on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 11:53:52 from 63.255.172.2

My sister uses a triathlon outfit (with lightly padded/quick drying short liner for the bike shorts). Most of the people I saw at the previous triathlon are adding a few pieces of clothes, but not changing (other than from bike shoes to running shoes and I have no bike shoes).

My plan for this triathlon - since the bike is only 9 miles and my butt can handle 9 miles without padding - is to to the swim in a running bra and running shorts and then pull on a running shirt for the bike and run portions. I figure I'd rather drip than try and change.

Best hint I found - find a 5 ballon bucket and spray paint it pink (for Marion). You carry your gear in the bucket and can turn it upside down to sit on for the transitions. It gives you something to spot off of. Plus - a lot of people have big helium ballons to help them find their transition setup.

This will be great - Marion, Miles and Marcia (my sister) all tri'ing together!

Nice work out!! I say check out the tri-suits too!

From Teena on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 14:32:25 from 67.177.20.13

Marion,

Didn't read everyone's comments but I absolutely LOVE to run right after I swim. My favorite is to just swim in some compression shorts and a sports bra (unless there is a lot of guys around, then I'll thrown on a tank), then hop out of the water, rip off the cap and goggles, throw on the shoes and start the run. It feels great to run wet! Seriously ... I love it!!!

What I do hate is the silly line on my forehead from the cap. Maybe I needed a different one ... do they all do that?

Also, some tris let you wear wetsuits ... how about the one you are doing?

From Maurine/Tarzan on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 15:10:42 from 63.255.172.2

Don't mean to laugh - but this is a very beginner triathlon with the swim in an indoor pool. (Like 2-3 laps) I am just picturing Marion all seriously decked out in a wetsuit......

From Teena on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 15:12:41 from 67.177.20.13

I should have read all the comments before I asked the wetsuit question!!! :) hee hee! (Now I am laughing as well.)

Okay ... that totally sounds like a tri I should begin with. I need more info!!! :)

(You crack me up Maurine ... are you feeling any better today?)

From Maurine/Tarzan on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 15:15:55 from 63.255.172.2

Har har har ! ;D It is a 400 meter swim, if it is a 25 meter pool, which most are in Utah, then it is 16 laps, Missy ;) I may not need the wet suit, but I still could DIE!!! (if from nothing else, but humiliation because I over dressed ;)

You guys are such funny friends!!! :) xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

From Teena on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 15:19:48 from 67.177.20.13

Marion ... oh cute Marion!!!!

You will do fantastic!! 16 laps is a big deal ... but you will not die!!!! :)

Btw, have you tried keeping track of your laps with the little buoy thing-a-madobs yet?

I love it! Makes things so much easier. But they do sometimes float away if you have splashers in the next lane!!!

You will do GREAT!!!!

From Teena on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 15:20:23 from 67.177.20.13

Better than great in fact!!!!

From marion on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 15:32:24 from 71.219.57.176

Where do you get the buoy thing? I am getting ready to make one out of beads. I have been counting the laps by time. It takes me between 40-50 sec to swim a 50, so I am guessing that 20 minutes in the pool is about a 1000 m. The time is so sad :( David used to swim the 50 in 21 seconds. I am excited that I am getting more endurance every time I swim.

I tried to wear my swim cap today but it was too irritating. I need to get a new Lycra one. I get my hair all wet and then slather it with conditioner then stick it in the fabric cap. When I am done, I just wash it and it is nice and soft and NO green or straw hair :) I am to old to have shiny greenish straw hair ;)

Teena- you really should do the Tri with us. It is only a 400m swim, 9 mile bike and 5k run. I am using it as my "rest" period after the marathon.

From Teena on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 15:36:09 from 67.177.20.13

That seriously sounds like so much fun ... I am definitely considering it!

The things I am talking about are those floating rings that make up the lane dividers. The separate, and I push them back as far as I can so that every two laps I can move one over. Easy-peesy-mac-and-cheesy!!!

From marion on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 15:40:38 from 71.219.57.176

Oh!!! The lane lines! Ah ha!!! I am going to do that. Ours are pretty tight, but maybe I can rig something to work. Hmmmm... now you have me thinking... Hmmmmmmm......

YOU HAVE TO DO IT!!! Kelli is thinking about it.. or at least she was sort of thinking about it a while ago ;)

From Kelli on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 18:35:45 from 71.219.89.21

WHAT???? When did I say that? Me swim, never!!!!! I could do the running and biking part, but I would drown on the swim. Can I just do the back float and have someone pull me?

From Carolyn in Colorado on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 19:52:38 from 198.241.156.7

I'm with you on triathlons, Kelli. I couldn't swim to save my life. Okay, maybe to save my life, but that's all.

From marion on Wed, Jul 08, 2009 at 13:06:55 from 71.219.57.176

Kelli- we talked about having the whole families do it :) Don't you remember? You said Scott was a GREAT swimmer :) I can lend you a swimmer if you want to do it :) I can lend you 4 :)

From Kelli on Wed, Jul 08, 2009 at 13:25:29 from 71.219.89.21

That is right. Scott is a great swimmer!
