I am starting the Hal Higdon Novice II training program this week.  I'll be starting on week 6.  It will give me 3 cross training days each week.  My #1 concern in training for the marathon is injury as I start adding the longer runs.  I will bike 60 minutes and do yoga for 60 minutes on Mondays and Fridays and Sunday afternoon, I'll go for a walk with the family.  I have 2, 1/2 marathons coming up and they fit perfectly into this training schedule.  I am really excited and terrified all at the same time :)  My only goal is to finish this marathon.  The time does not matter at all to me.  I'll return to 6 running days per week after the marathon.  I feel like in a another year, I will have a greater base and ability to handle the long runs.  I'm also, as usual, going to try to lose more weight.  I really am happy with where I am with weight, except with regards to running.  My happiness with my current weight has made it impossible to lose more weight, after all, as long as we are willing to accept the consequences of our actions, we can not change.  As soon as we are no longer willing to accept the consequences of our actions, changes can be made :)  I think I am there, finally.

Have a great week!  I am of to read the two marathon books I bought, Peter Pf...somthings and Jack Daniels.  David thinks they should have named Daniels book, "Running with Jack Daniels."

Sounds like a good plan to me. I wish you luck!

I am so excited to see you being so excited about being so excited.....

It sounds like you are planning things out well. I probably need to go back to following a schedule in order to get better. My first few years I always followed a training plan - now I am lazy and make up my own.

Sounds like you have a plan! Go Marion!!! What a fun journey, and a short one, the marathon is right around the corner, I am excited for you too!!! You will do GREAT!!!

barry- thanks! I am going to need it :)

Maurine- I am just trying so hard to not get injured that I decided to listen to Luz and follow a plan that really feels conservative and doable for me. BTW- My feet have been bugging me for the last few weeks. It's pretty random discomfort and comes and goes. It feels like achy feet after a day at a wedding in bad shoes. any ideas? I am sticking to my Birkenstock's for shoes. I look pretty dorky at church but who cares ;)

Leslie- you popped in there while I was typing :) I am SO glad that it is coming fast. It will help with the nerves :) Pls check out my foot comment to Maurine.

Marion, your were the one giving me advice on the feet, I think you know what to do, Birkies sound good, stretch and ice and Vit. I, but I do have to say my one week off my feet sure did a world of good for me. I doubt I ever would have taken a week off but I was forced to and now am glad I did. I think your program looks good, I think your feet will thank you for the cross training and rest. I am glad you are taking a sensible approach to this. You will be fine.

Marion what is the differance between pace and run on the Wed. column? Did you get Hal's book too?

From leslie on Sun, Mar 15, 2009 at 20:15:57 from 76.23.61.78

Okay, I think I want to do that training program too. Then in July I am following a 50 miler training program I found on-line.

From tarzan on Sun, Mar 15, 2009 at 20:18:27 from 63.255.172.2

I'd also invest in a foot roller. They are pretty cheap - but hit lots of little sensitive points on your feet.

From barry on Sun, Mar 15, 2009 at 20:21:55 from 75.174.5.124

With your feet problem have you tried soaking them with warm water, 1/2 cup of epson salt and 1/2 cup of white vinegar in a pan? I think that might help your feet a lot.

From Marion on Sun, Mar 15, 2009 at 20:39:25 from 71.213.125.164

Barry- I've not tried warm. I have been shocking the tar out of them in ice water. I will try that tonight :)

Maurine- Where do I get one of those? Walmart?

Les- I think you run the race pace you want, but Luz said she had always ignored that pace stuff and just concentrated on the miles. I am going to do that too and just throw in strides when I am feeling the love ;) I didn't get Hal's book. I got Jack Daniels and Peter Pft...something. They are pretty hard core. MichelleL and Smooth use them, respectively. I just want to understand more about training so next year I will be ready for a competitive race...maybe ;)

There is nothing quite like running your first marathon! It's very exciting. I was just thinking the other day about when I did, and wishing I still had that "Top of the world" feeling from crossing the finish line that first time! It's really amazing.

From Marion on Mon, Mar 16, 2009 at 14:45:33 from 71.219.49.37

Thanks Lori- It will help me a ton to hang on to the picture of the finish line to get me through this.

From JulieC on Mon, Mar 16, 2009 at 17:42:56 from 67.42.16.213

I love your outlook Marion!! Have fun reading the running book. Is it on tape? maybe you could run to it. You know kill two birds with one stone. Aren't you just loving the weather today? I say today but I should have said the weather from at least 8 am until now, you never know here in Utah when you will be outrun by a snowstorm : ( !!!!

From Mandy on Mon, Mar 16, 2009 at 17:59:50 from 206.251.43.221

They totally should have named it "Running with Jack Daniels". I bet the sales for it would have spiked a lot higher than expected. I'm glad you're taking things nice and slow with your training. I would give you some advice, but I have none. Although, the Body Shop has some foot soaks that have helped me a lot when I've done them. I haven't closed my party yet, so if you're interested let me know. Good luck with everything and enjoy the sushi dinner tonight!
