First snow run of the year!  Yeah!!!  How do you run when the sides of the roads are piled with slow and the roads are ice?  I do want to run outside all winter, but I don't want to die! :(  Any pointers?  KimR came with today.   I love Kim.  Yes, I say that everytime I run with her, but it is true!  I think my garmin is sick.  The splits don't match with the run average.  Maybe the snow messes it all up.

Happy snow day to all!!!

Good question. I remember last December I almost got taken out by a snowplow on the backroads mainly because our redneck snowplows drive without looking at what's in front of them!

I know a lot of runners use Yaktracks or something like that so they can still run on the side of the road without slipping. Either that or the DREADMILL dun DUN dUn!

From leslie on Wed, Nov 05, 2008 at 10:56:48

I was just going to suggest Yaktracks, they work great! Way to get out there! I plan to run outside all winter too. The dreadmill is just too dreadful! Have a wonderful snowy day!!

From snoqualmie on Wed, Nov 05, 2008 at 11:02:24

I have both Yaktrax and Ice Joggers. The former are better for snow and the latter for ice, but what to do when you have both? I also intend to try screw-shoes this winter: http://www.skyrunner.com/screwshoe.htm

From Lucia on Wed, Nov 05, 2008 at 11:21:35

Yaktrax are awesome! You can also screw some screws to the bottom of your shoes, just make sure they aren't too long so they don't puncture your feet! - maybe your hubby can help you out with that. I can't believe you already have snow up there! I ran on shorts and a t-shirt last night! Great mileage, Marion, you're a tough cookie!

From marion on Wed, Nov 05, 2008 at 11:41:51

Thanks guys! I knew you'd know how to help me!!! :)

Benn- Amen on the redneck plow drivers!! I tell my kids to listen for them. If they hear one coming, run toward a house as fast as possible. Scary!!!

Les- Treadmill is way to dreadful!!! We can do it ALL winter ;)

Sno- thanks for the info!!! Whoo ho!!! I will check them all out!

Luc- YOU SUCK!!! :D JK- that is SO AWESOME that it is all balmy out there! I like balmy. If I were rich, I'd fly around the world to run where ever the warm weather is! :) I'd take all my runner friends too ;D

From The Howling Commando on Wed, Nov 05, 2008 at 13:06:53

I checked out the website that Sno suggested, and I think that I'm going to take my Asics 2120s since they are almost maxed out and screw them up like Pimp My Ride style so that I'll have a way to run out on the icy backroads without having to invest in yaktracks

From The Howling Commando on Wed, Nov 05, 2008 at 13:07:26

But then again, maybe it's because I want to live dangerously and like to use powertools! Muahahaha

From leslie on Wed, Nov 05, 2008 at 13:11:48

I love it! PIMP MY RIDE! That is too funny!

From Metcalf Running on Wed, Nov 05, 2008 at 13:16:40

I will try the screw shoe thing this year... my friend used to swear by it. Also for comfort factor, I hate having cold feet... you can get very thing foot warmers that you stick to the top of your sock, they help keep your toes warm, then put a strip of duct tape over the mesh on top of your shoe. Make sure that the tape does not get under the tread or your shoe will be slippery. But having the tape over the mesh of the shoe helps keep your toes warm.

Ok- I am going to let my husband go to town on my shoes with the screws. (it took me a bit to come up with a sentence that was family friendly when combining the words "my husband" and "screwing" ;) I like the cheapness of it! We are going to be super cool with our fantasticly cool Pimped Out shoes!

Lori- thanks for the tape ideas. The little snow balls land on my shoes and make my toes wet and COLD!!! I am going to be so stylin!

From leslie on Wed, Nov 05, 2008 at 13:33:18

I had to laugh out loud Marion! Hey, I am starving right now. Off to the kitchen to see what damage I can do.

From Kim R on Wed, Nov 05, 2008 at 13:51:48

Marion--you are crazy!!!!! But, you make me laugh and laugh and laugh!

Okay-I don't get the screws in your shoes. Doesn't it feel like your running on screws and I can just see the blisters etc!!!!Yikes!!!!!

The duct tape is a good idea--not pretty--but good!

Thanks for two great runs!

i must say, reading all of your (meaning utahians... is that what you call your selves?) blog posts about the cold weather is realllllly making me appreciate the weather here! we had a couple nights below freezing and some chilly days about a week ago, but we're back up to the upper 70s :) i'll enjoy it while it lasts! and i trained through the entire winter last year without touching a treadmill! how spoiled.

From marion on Wed, Nov 05, 2008 at 16:18:59

Lucky bummer! I am going to train outside all winter too, but that means the teens and some single didgets! Ouch!!!

From Kelli on Wed, Nov 05, 2008 at 17:31:54

Way to run outside. BIG treadmill day for me. I do not mind the cold as long as the wind is absent!!!

Have a happy day!

From kungfublonde on Wed, Nov 05, 2008 at 18:06:47

You guys are all making it very apparent to me what a wimp I am! As brave as I get is quinoa and tofu- inside my cozy warm house! :)

From Smooth on Wed, Nov 05, 2008 at 19:08:10

Wow Marion, you're a diehard. GOOD JOB running outside in the blizzard. I don't mind the snow, or even the cold; but black ice scares me...that and wind and aggressive snow plows.

It's SO PRETTY out there right now. I just HAVE to get up early to run outside tomorrow.

Happy Snow Day to YOU too!!!

From marion on Wed, Nov 05, 2008 at 21:53:37

Thanks all you wonderful friends! Who ever doesn't run outside every day had to pay for gas down to Painters! :) Bahahahahahahahah!!!!

From MichelleL on Sat, Nov 08, 2008 at 14:52:09

I run in the road and just watch for cars. Running in the early morning helps because of the fewer cars.

From Megan on Sun, Nov 09, 2008 at 22:50:59

I have no advice for running in the snow... except that sounds really awesome. i have never ran in the snow! It never snows anywhere close to where i live. great miles this week, I see you got your 10 miler in last saturday, fun!

From marion on Sun, Nov 09, 2008 at 23:29:31

Life sounds coush Meg- I remember the days of no snow! :)
