I started running in May of 2006 while losing 85 lbs after my youngest was born.  I have 6 fantastic kids, 3 girls and 3 boys and a wonderful husband.  My oldest is in college and my baby is in pre-school. (Six kids in 5 schools ;)

I have been very frustrated by the slowness of my paces. They seem to be getting slower and slower.  I had a bit of a reality check with myself this evening.  My #1 focus right now is building my mileage and losing weight.  Once my mileage is comfortably between 40-50 miles a week and I have lost about 20 more lbs, then I will get focused on speed.  For now, I am going to add a 3 mile mini tempo run a week in the middle of a 5 mile run.  Basically for 3 miles I will hold an 11 min pace.  I know I can do this, because I have done it before.  I am really going to focus on the mileage increases and how great that is.  Oh yeah, and the weight loss too ;)  I just want to get to 40-50 miles a week without injury, which means slow and steady :)  Patience is not one of my finer attributes!

Have a GREAT week everyone!!!  I sure can't express how much your support means to me :D

I like your plan. Focus on building your base mileage up sure and steady, the pounds will drop as your mileage increase.

The tempo run once a week is AWESOME. Try doing them the same route every week, you'll be able to see progress over time, say 4-6 weeks. It takes a lot of focus to hold the pace steady at first. Tempo runs are hard, but so good for us. YES, like you said: YOU CAN DO IT !!!

New month, new week, great way to start anew!!! We do need each other.

It will come - you have to be patient. You were probably relatively inactive during the 'heavy' years and so you need to realize it might take a couple of years to get to where you want to be.

I had been a distance walker for more than 25 years before I took up marathoning and that has helped me be relatively injury free.

Yes, patience! Remember those of us who got injured and what we had to go through... that should be enough to keep you going slow and steady! Slow and steady wins the race!

You look so amazing already, it's hard to imagine you have 20 more lbs to lose...

You could also do shorter, faster intervals - a few of 100 meters or so, at near sprint speed. That seemed to work for me before my injury...

I ran on a tank top and shorts today - jealous? :)

From marion on Mon, Nov 03, 2008 at 16:04:59

Jealous??? JEALOUS!!!! I'd say I hate you, but I love you too much for that! I could have run in a tank top and shorts, but I would have froze to DEATH and DIED!!!!

Hey- Sasha says 30-40 more! I'm really fat, just ask anyone! :( No don't, they will lie to make me feel better! Hoe hum, I've got a rolley pollie tum!!!
