Nice run this morning with Kim R on our usual hilly route.  There was the ever slightest drizzle of rain at the beginning and at the end :)  I am amazed at how much better I do with half of my run uphill.  I may run faster up hill than I do on flat.  I am going to have to study that one out.

Anyhoo- I have got to get on my bike and work this booty off!  BTW, I have GAINED 8 lbs since I have added the extra activity in!  ARGH!!!!! :(  I am not a happy camper.  I'll be fine...right?  Trust in the training!

Running- 3.53 miles, 42:28 minutes, ave 12:03, best 7:35, Laps-11:39, 11:09, 10:27, 10:10(.53)

Check out that mileage! Way to go Marion! Don't forget that muscle weighs more than fat (or so they say)... A fellow blogger suggested I added a little speed work to my daily runs, and I noticed I started losing some weight when I did. It may just be 3 or 4 times of running 100-yards close to sprint speed, imagining the end of the block is the finish like of your marathon, then slowing down... it really works! The latest Runner's world issue has some info on interval work and how it's a great way to lose weight.

You are adding up those miles like water!

Check you out girl!!! You have got the miles this week! Keep it up, you are doing great! I hate when I gain weight but you have to think you are building muscle, more blood, bone dencidy. This is what I try to tell myself. Maybe I will try some intervals too :)

Thanks ladies! In a few weeks, when I am not so pooped from all of the working out, I will add some interval training. Right now, I am trying for negative splits on all of my runs. I am trying to make the last mile-ish pretty strong, or at least faster than the other miles ;D I just want to be you guys! I have a lot of ground to cover to even be able to keep up you you two on your super slow days :) You're the best, thanks for your encouragement!

Nice run. Sorry to hear about the weight. Are you drinking enough water? F.Y.I. for me, before i start to loose weight i gain a little then i start to loose weight. Maybe that is what is happening to you? Something to think about?? Have a great day!!

From leslie on Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 13:04:17

Faster up hill than flat! That is very interesting! Good job on the negative splits! My scale is up too, it is not good for the head, but we are working hard! WE are active and working our bodies and it is all good, that's what I say. I saw you Sat. and you look FABULOUS!!!!! I am still 6 pounds away from my goal, I think it helps to put it out there... do you think? We will get there girl!!!

I totally get what you're doing. I do it too. I run much better uphill because I assume the 'lean forward-falling' posture that I should be running with on flat groud. I prefer uphill. Also, additional activity makes you more HUNGRY. It's hard to balance that with added miles, but you can do it. You could try what I do: Eat all your carbs/protein before 3:00 in the afternoon and eat only cooked vedgetables/salad or fruit in the evening. That way all your big food has a better chance of being burned off before bed time. I always gain weight initially when I start adding more miles/stuff. It makes you hungry!

I like that idea Luzylew! I am going to give it a try! Makes sense to me.

Thanks you guys! :) The FAT must SURRENDER!!!

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 18:15:46

Weight gain can happen when fat is being replaced with muscle. You are not the first one on the blog to experience this, but you are the first I've spotted who gained 8 pounds. I suppose this suggests that you used to have very little muscle mass, which is consistent with your 42 minute 5 K a year ago vs 30:57 this year. One more case in point for not using weight as a measurement of health.

On the positive side of things, you are running better, you are getting stronger so who cares if you gained 8 pounds.

From marion on Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 19:42:21

Sasha- one thing I have noticed about myself is that after long runs, 8+ miles, I will weigh about 5 lbs more the next day and for about 3 days after. I am guessing that I must retain water after hard workouts in responce to the lactic acid maybe. I have never done this many minutes of exercise for this many days in a row. I also have been eating a TON, as I am STARVING! Usually when I am starving, I lose weight, even though I eat. Anyway- it's all good. I am committed to this whole "death by activity" ;) My neighbors think I am nuts :D I must be doing something right. So, you're right, who cares (except I do...)
